AK ( Artillery Compass) is a Soviet military compass designed for the needs of artillery units.
Along with Adrianov’s compass, it was considered the most common navigation instrument in the USSR armed forces.
Design
The design of the AK compass is generally similar to the design of the Adrianov compass, however, it has a number of innovations. Unlike Adrian’s compass, the AK compass is equipped with a hinged safety cover, on the inside of which there is a small mirror. This mirror can be used during sighting to observe the magnetic arrow and dial, which allows you to simultaneously verify the orientation of the compass and count the angle on the dial. The sighting slot and front sight are rigidly fixed to the compass case
The ring limb of the compass AK has a scale marked in thousandths with a division price equal to 100 thousandths, which in a degree grid corresponds to an angle of 6° Signatures to the divisions are applied in increments of 500 thousandths.
A directrix in the form of a bright white strip, which is precisely aligned with the zero direction of the limb, is applied to the protective glass of the compass. The magnetic needle of the compass AK is equipped with a brake, which is activated automatically when the hinged safety cover is closed.
