Item up for bid is a wonderful pinback rarity that reads "SIGN CAL NOW!". This piece would have been made sometime around 1992 when Cal Ripken Jr. was in a very public dispute with the Orioles organization over a contract extension that would prevent him from becoming a free agent at the end of the season. He blamed his slump on his stress over contract disputes and openly told members of the media that he felt the Orioles were playing with him. Some fans wanted him to go while the majority were solidly in Cal's corner and growing more infuriated by the day that the organization had not signed their hometown boy to a contract worthy of a Hall of Fame caliber player.
Pin shows no maker's mark so was likely something produced by fans themselves and worn to the games to put pressure on ownership to get it done. Back is metal and shows age appropriate tarnish. Pinback measures 2-1/8" x 2-1/8". We have been in this business a long time now and have seen tens of thousands of pieces of Orioles memorabilia and have never encountered one of these before.
