The
SunPCi-II
(375-0131, "Chimera") is a complete PC on a PCI card, and occupies a full length slot. It comes with:
600MHz Intel Celeron CPU
256MB RAM
External connectors for VGA, Ethernet, USB, audio in/out, serial, parallel
Internal connectors for IDE, floppy?
Has a surprisingly full-featured BIOS! Not sure what good that is, but it's
cool
.
The SunPCi software (see note below) lets you create a virtual disk image on the Sun's hard disk, and either display the graphics output in a window on the Sun's screen or on a second VGA monitor (as shown in the photos). It was designed to run any version of Windows from Win98 through XP (you have to provide install media) or DR-DOS (included). It was kinda slick at the time.
I'm including a free
Sun Type-5c keyboard (PC layout) and mouse
. The VGA displays are
not
included.
Condition notes:
While the inside is pretty clean, and the machine has been stored in a cool, dry, smoke- and pet-free environment and seen only very light use, it will need a tiny bit of TLC to really make it shiny again.
There are a few scratches and scuffs, and the front plastics are yellowed (it seems
completely random
that half the U5s listed on Ebay are yellowed and half aren't!), but the usual retrobrite treatment should fix that up if it bugs ya;
The NVRAM battery is dead
,
because it always is
. Lots of info about replacing/reprogramming these available on-line!
I'm not sure if there's a CMOS battery on the SunPCi card; you might need to replace that too.
The floppy passes self test but assume it will need a good cleaning; the fan is a little grumbly so you might want to open up the power supply and check for dust, etc.
The keyboard and mouse are a bit grungy and so I gave 'em a quick wipe down with isopropyl; ya won't catch cooties but will want to give 'em a good scrub. I threw these in at the last minute since the U5 uses a Sun keyboard (
not
PS/2) and I had extras available. How long as it been since you cleaned an honest-to-goodness mouse ball? It's so satisfying when you scrape the guck off the rollers and it rolls so smoothly again...
SunPCi software notes:
I'm tossing in a CDROM and some booklets that came with the SunPCi card, but they might be a little bit out of date. The hard disk contains a basic Solaris 7_HW11/99 32-bit installation; I've left a folder in
/root
containing a download of the driver (v2.3.2), recommended patch, and some PDFs of the installation and user guides to save you some time searching for them. The software officially supports Solaris 7, 8 or 9 (but the installer is easily patched to run on Solaris 10 as well). If you just want a U5 to put *BSD or Linux on, I have another one listed that doesn't include the SunPCi card -- which isn't supported on any other OS, AFAIK...
Local pickup is preferred!
But I can ship UPS or FedEx Ground with a couple of days additional handling time.
Please don't hesitate to ask questions if you're curious about this old machine. Thanks for your interest!
