SUPERB CIRCA 1880-1910 DAVID GLEN EDINBURGH PRACTICE COCUSWOOD BAGPIPE CHANTER
SUPERB CIRCA 1880-1910 DAVID GLEN EDINBURGH PRACTICE COCUSWOOD BAGPIPE CHANTER
    Description
Presented for your consideration is this superbly crafted bagpipe practice chanter by one of the most heralded of bagpipe artisans and composers-David Glen of Edinburgh. This chanter is in untouched, uncleaned, as-found condition with a wonderful patina. When assembled the chanter measures approximately 18 inches in length and is constructed of cocuswood with a nickel silver ferrule and a sole made of an exotic material commonly found on high quality pipes. The whole has assumed a very nice patina. The chanter separates into two portions which are friction fit through the use of a wrapped flax thread. There is a little bit of looseness, but that could be easily remedied by rewrapping and waxing the thread. If you know vintage pipes, you know what I'm talking about and how to do it correctly. The lower segment is stamped "DAVID GLEN EDINBURGH" below the ferrule. David Glen is one of the most famous makers of bagpipes. Coming from an established family/name in the trade, he took over his father's shop in 1873. He operated under the name David Glen until 1912 when his sons in turn joined him in the business and the name was changed to David Glen & Sons at that time. Glen pipes are noted for their distinct rich tone and are very highly regarded as playing instruments and investment-grade cultural art. This chanter is in near perfect condition with some expected mouth wear on the mouth piece and one tiny flake immediately below the nickel silver ferrule. I don't see any cracks in the chanter body. There arer two small cracks in the end that is covered by the ferrule, but they do not extend into the body.  There is a cute little caricature someone drew on the ferrule in red ink, but that could be easily removed with some alcohol if so desired.  The reed is missing; however, I'm sure that is a replaceable/perishable part anyway. This wonderful chanter would complement any collection of piping ephemera, could be put to use again as a fine practice instrument, or stand on its own merit as an object d art and craftmanship of Scotland. More fine ethnographic material from Brother Rabbit's hutch!
